Were you recently inconvenienced by a Qatar Airways last-minute flight cancellation?
The unexpected cancellation of a flight can cause significant disruption, particularly if you have connecting flights or other travel plans lined up. But, the silver lining is that, under EU/UK law and Qatar Airways flight cancellation policy, you are protected on some of its flights. These regulations have been in place for over a decade and hence, if Qatar Airways cancels your flight, they are bound to look after you and provide an acceptable resolution.
The EU/UK law covers Qatar Airways flights from Europe.
1. Qatar Airways Flight Cancellation: Last-Minute Flight Cancellation
In the event of a Qatar Airways last-minute flight cancellation, you have certain rights.
Qatar Airways is not a EU airline. And EU laws do not cover all of its flights. However, there is good news! If you happen to be departing from a European airport (including UK airports), you are entitled to protection under EU law, specifically Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. Rest assured that your rights are safeguarded in such cases.
- If the flight cancellation leads to an extended wait at the airport, you have a right to care. For instance, if the delay is for 3 hours, you should receive a food voucher. If it leads to an overnight stay, you should be offered complimentary hotel accommodation and transfers.
- If you opt against taking the replacement flight offered, you are eligible for a full refund from Qatar Airways. You can choose to either have this refund transferred to your bank account or provided as a Qatar Airways voucher.
- Provided it’s a last-minute flight cancellation (i.e., flight cancelled within 2 weeks of the original departure date), and if it’s Qatar Airways’ fault, you can claim flight cancellation compensation from Qatar Airways.
If you miss a connecting flight due to a cancellation on your Qatar Airways flight, you may be eligible for compensation. Refer to our Qatar Airways missed connection compensation guide for more details.
Essentially, the rules mirror those for flight delays. You need to ascertain how much later you arrived at your destination compared to your original arrival time.
These compensation rules apply to Qatar Airways flights from Europe.
By Europe and EU here on this page (and on this website in general) we mean all EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK), Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin (French Antilles), the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.
2. What to Do if Your Flight Is Cancelled Last-Minute?
Your course of action in the event of a last-minute cancellation depends on your location at the time. The steps to take vary if you are at the airport already versus if you are still at home.
2.1 If You Are Still at Home or Hotel
In case you are at home and receive news of your flight’s cancellation, it is advisable to remain there till further notice. Reach out to Qatar Airways’ customer service to understand the next steps.
As mentioned earlier, Qatar Airways will extend assistance. They will brief you on your available options – possibly departing the same day or the following day, depending on flight availability. Don’t forget that you can also request a flight with a different airline.
2.2 If You Are Already at the Airport
If you are already at the airport when the flight gets cancelled, avoid passing through airport security. A new flight will be arranged for you, which would mean you have to go through the check-in process again, get a new boarding pass, and if you have baggage, check-in once more, and go through passport control. If you have already traversed security, attempt to return to the public access area of the airport.
It’s crucial to connect with Qatar Airways’ representatives at the airport to learn about the next steps. They will provide you with assistance.
